What to Expect in Your First Counselling Session
Starting counselling for the first time can feel like a big step — and if you've never sat down with a therapist before, it's completely normal to feel a bit nervous about what actually happens. Here's a gentle walk-through of what your first session with me looks like.
Before we begin
Every client starts with a free 20-minute introductory call. This isn't a therapy session itself — it's a chance for us to say hello, for you to ask any questions, and for both of us to get a feel for whether we're a good fit. There's no obligation to continue, and no judgement either way.
The assessment session
Your first proper session is usually about us getting to know each other more. I'll ask about what's brought you to counselling, a little about your background, and what you're hoping to get out of our work together. We also run through the counselling contract together to ensure we both understand the legal and ethical responsibilities in therapy. You won't need to have it all figured out — part of my job is helping you find the words for things that might feel hard to explain right now.
A space built around you
As an LGBTQ+ affirmative therapist, I want you to know from the very first session that your identity, your relationships, and your lived experience are respected here, not something you need to explain or justify. Sessions are offered by phone, online, or in person in Doncaster, whichever feels most comfortable for you.
What happens next
After the assessment, we'll talk about your availability for sessions and how often you'd like to meet — weekly isn't a requirement (although recommended to begin with) and we can find a rhythm that works for your life. There's no fixed limit on the number of sessions; we go at the pace that's right for you.
If you're still deciding whether counselling is the right step, that free 20-minute call is a low-pressure way to find out. Get in touch to arrange yours.
