LGBTQ+ Affirmative Therapy

Finding a therapist who genuinely understands your experience — rather than one you have to explain it to — can change everything about how counselling feels.

I'm Gareth, a gay, integrative therapist, and LGBTQ+ affirmative practice isn't an add-on to how I work — it's the foundation of it. Your pronouns are respected without question. Your relationships, whatever form they take, are treated as valid. And your lived experience, whether that's around your sexuality, gender identity, or how those things intersect with the rest of your life, is met with real understanding, not just professional politeness.

What LGBTQ+ Affirmative Therapy Means

It means you don't have to spend the first few sessions educating me. It means I won't pathologise your identity or treat it as the “issue” we need to solve. And it means the space itself — how I listen, the language I use, the questions I ask — is built around the specific things that can come up for LGBTQ+ people, not adapted from a generic template.

What I Can Help With

  • Exploring or coming to terms with your sexuality or gender identity
  • Coming out — to yourself, family, friends, or at work, whenever and however you choose to
  • Support through gender transition, at whatever stage you're at
  • Navigating family dynamics or relationships that feel more complicated because of who you are
  • Anxiety, low mood, or self-esteem struggles that connect to identity or acceptance
  • Simply having a space where you don't have to translate yourself

A Therapist Who's Walked a Version of This Path

I won't pretend my journey is the same as yours — everyone's is different — but understanding who I am, in a world that hasn't always made that easy, is part of why I do this work. I'm an accredited member of the NCPS and work within their ethical framework, and I'm listed with Pink Therapy, the UK's directory of LGBTQ+ specialist therapists.
